Mercy; Humbly Walk with Your God
Mercy; Humbly Walk with Your God

Continuing with the use of stencils, text and spraypaints, I explored the idea of grace and mercy. The reds and blacks are strong colours paired with white crosses. The text is taken from Micah 6:8.
“Mercy
Mercy
Mercy
Mercy
To do what is right
To love MERCY
And to walk humbly with your God”

Burn; Holy Ground

This work uses a different technique of using spray paint and stencils to create the work. I wanted to explore just how detailed I could make an artwork without using brushes. This work explores the encounter of Moses and the burning bush.
“Burn Burn Ngiha
Do not come any closer
Take off your sandals
You are standing on holy ground
Tapu Whenua”

This painting had a couple of iterations. It was going to have a pair called “Pillar of Smoke” referencing the guides that God provided leading Israel out of Egypt. However, time and efforts lead me into other areas of painting. This painting also got damaged and was reframed on a slightly shorted frame to allow for it’s sale.
Light Box II
Light Box II

This is the second of internal views of a box that contains light. The text is created by printing out the words and then cutting them out with a knife before dabbing paint over the top. It’s not exactly handwritten, but it creates neat text in paint.
“LIFE. Rise the next day. Light the path. SHINE. Life. Containment. Containment. Containment. Contamination.

Following on from “Light Humbling“, this is the red version.
“LIGHT. which ____ the darkness, but we have the light of life. Lead the way for the lost. Illuminate the soul.”
Idealistic
W220 x H420

This work is a comment on Don Brash’s ‘Orewa speach’ where he stated several ideals that would see New Zealand move on from two cultures and move towards one country, one people. It caused a lot of controversy, and although it had many good points, they all seemed to me to be quite idealistic in nature.
This was created as part of a block course at Art School where we had to limit ourselves in some way. For this, I decided that I would create the artwork purely by using finger painting. Finger painting is usually an art and craft activity limited to the early childhood years and the juxtaposition was to see if a full work of art could be created.
Hell’s Heaven
W1890 x H2015
Private Collection
This work is one of my first large paintings on unstretched calico. It depicts the vision of hell with a little slice of heaven in it. The green tree is a symbol of hope in an otherwise vast and destroyed landscape.
