The Hill of Tamatea; The Land Eater
2006
Situated in the Hawkes Bay just outside of Porangahau, The Hill of Tamatea; The Land Eater was originally painted from situe and then completed at home. The reason for choosing this piece is largely due to the location having the longest name in the world. In Te Reo Māori, the name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, and translates literally to “the summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one.
